A South African Safari

South Africa is synonymous with safari vacations, particularly for her many decadent and luxurious safari lodges that are available, but South Africa also offers prime game viewing destinations, with an excellent mix of safari experiences, based on the many different eco-systems across the country: the deserts and the robust black-maned lions of the Kalahari, to the scrub bush of the Eastern and Western Cape, where close encounters with whales, dolphins and nature’s most awesome predator, the great white shark, along with all manner of marine life may also be explored, to the dense savannah of the Kruger National Park and the private reserves that adjoin her eastern boundary, where Africa’s Big Five and innumerable species of reptile, mammal and bird life will excite and enthral. ‘A safari has often been described as a life changing experience, and even as a South African, I truly subscribe to this statement as I am always moved and humbled each time I have the opportunity to venture into Africa’s wild lands.’ Fiona Gordon, Dec 2010

Budget Safaris

Safaris on a shoe-string are absolutely possible as South Africa has a wealth of National Parks and wildlife sanctuaries that cater for the price conscious traveller. South African National Parks operate and maintain an excellent range of accommodation options in all of South Africa’s National Parks, along with camping and caravan sites. An attractive feature of travelling 2 and 3 star is the opportunity to interact with local South Africa families, as camping and caravanning is very much a part of the South African culture, along with braai’ing (barbeque) most evenings whilst on holiday!

Throughout our National Parks, one is able to self-drive to view wildlife and for the most part it is not necessary to hire a four wheel drive. However we highly recommend that you do hop on board an open vehicle game drive, with professional ranger as their expert knowledge of the animals and the bush will ‘bring it to life’, and their insider knowledge of the best game viewing spots will allow for close encounters with Africa’s wildlife.

Overland Africa

This is quite a different ‘way’ to travel South Africa and Africa – we highly recommend this for single travellers as it’s usually a social affair with the sharing of chores and experiences with a gregarious group of more intrepid travellers. Overland safaris and holidays may involve some camp duties, or not, depending on which option you choose, they are usually tented holidays, but ‘backpacker’ accommodated options are also available, but which ever option you choose, it’s fun, it’s a great opportunity to meet people, takes in the highlights, and is affordable.

South Africa Family Holidays

With practically year round sunshine, South Africa is a wonderful destination to bring the whole family on holiday, as children have loads of space to unleash their exuberance for life. In fact, South African’s are a child and family orientated community, where children are welcomed almost everywhere, and many of the safari lodges and hotels, cater specifically for children, with activities and nannies on hand to entertain questioning minds and give mom’s and dad’s the break they also need to re-energise.

Luxury Villas in Africa

Following hot on the heels of family holidays in South Africa, the luxury villa concept has burgeoned and for the more discerning traveller, throughout Africa there are opportunities to bring one’s family (perfect for special family celebrations and occasions, or to holiday with close friends) to an intimate and beautiful home-away-from-home villa, where all the amenities of a hotel are on offer, along with self-catering facilities (some villas have personal chefs available for in-house interactive cooking), within a secluded and luxurious environment. Certain villas offer butler services, and safari villas provide the use of a private vehicle for safari game drives. For the more price conscious, self-catering villas are available, minus the frills and spills of personalised attention. What the villa concept provides is space, privacy, fully serviced apartments that are beautifully decorated, all within the tourism hotspots throughout Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

Self-Drive South Africa

With an excellent road network that is well sign posted and easy to navigate – not only the main highways, but the many arterial roads as well, along with well-established car hire companies, where competition in recent years has seen car hire pricing become ever more affordable. Travelling South Africa at your own pace, brings its own special rewards as one may linger a while at look-out points, or change your itinerary at a whim to include other South African gems or activities and attractions entice en route, and discover friendly South African hospitality at a slightly slower pace. By self-driving there is the element of discovery, go where you choose at whatever pace or time that YOU want to, the journey itself is all a part of the thrill of being on vacation in a country that offers up unparalleled scenic beauty. However, we do ensure that you are as prepared for your journey as is necessary, with step by step driving directions (and maps) from accommodation establishment to accommodation establishment, direct contact details at all hotels and lodges on your itinerary, full South Africa maps are provided with reputable car rental agencies in every vehicle, and we are always at hand to assist you.

Safari Weddings in South Africa

A safari in Africa is as exotic and as ‘different’ an experience as one could hope for to ensure your anticipated ‘dream day’ is one to remember. We have selected a ‘short list’ of safari lodges who we feel offer that ‘something special’ based on their price ‘bracket’. One must remember that a safari wedding is not your ‘cheapest’ option and therefore you may want to save the safari element of your holiday for your honeymoon and all we can say for romance on safari is wow! Imagine a hot drawn bath with candles, petals and bubbles waiting on your return from your afternoon game drive and sun downers in the bush… followed by an evening meal out in the bush, with a roaring bonfire, gourmet cuisine, complimented with magnificent wines all to the accompaniment of the chorus of the wildlife that presses close – simply unique. Safari weddings can be costly as the destinations are remote, therefore simple requests such as flowers, photographer, and hairdresser will need to travel a fair distance to ‘get to you’.

Honeymoon South Africa

‘Spoilt for choice’ has got to be the adjective to use here, there are so many fabulous honeymoon hideaways and destinations to entice you, from cosmopolitan Cape Town where café culture, beach bronzed bodies and shopping (not to mention fabulous arts & crafts, wine routes and a mesmerising coastline), to dramatic scenery of the Drakensberg Mountain range in the Kingdom of the Zulu, where heli-flips to sip champagne at the ‘top of the world’ to gourmet retreats, and all things outdoors, mountain and natural will engage the senses. Then of course there’s safari, and a new term coined ‘spa’farai’ for the pre-requisite spa whilst on safari, certainly adds an element of additional pampering to your holiday. How about the wild beaches of the north coast of the Elephant Coast – here one can view wildlife on land and in the ocean, its Robinson-Crusoe style beaches, but with exquisite accommodation, cuisine and service.
